Before You Begin Your Short-Term Radon Test

3. DO NOT open test device until you are ready to start your test

Start the test before the expiration date on the device. The test duration is 2-4 days (48-96 hours). Unusual weather conditions affect test results. Do not perform the test during sustained high winds, heavy rain or extreme indoor conditions of heat, cold or humidity. Short term tests should not be placed in areas of high humidity. If humidity is unavoidable, tests placed in humid areas should not be exposed for more than 48 hours (2 days). A longer test duration may invalidate results.

Failure to follow the testing instructions or protocols may result in an invalid test. These instructions cannot anticipate or address every condition that arises when performing a radon test. Some states have regulations regarding radon testing. If you have questions about your state’s requirements please contact your State Radon Office.

Closed Building Conditions

  • Close all exterior doors and windows in the house and keep them closed except for normal entry and exit, as if it is winter
  • Air conditioners should be set to auto or recirculate
  • These conditions must be maintained 12 hours before and during the entire test
  • The temperature of the area being tested should be between 50-85°F

Choose a Test Location

  • Perform the test in the lowest livable area of the house. The location must be at least 3 feet from any door or window, 12 inches from exterior wall,2 - 5 feet from the floor or ceiling, and 4 inches from other objects.
  • If you are testing for a real estate transaction, place 2 devices side by side, 4 inches apart.

    Where to NOT Test:
    Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, closets, crawlspaces, or any area with humidity over 80%.
    Don’t place the device on stone surfaces or directly under blowing air.

Returning Device(s) to the Lab

Complete the Data Form online and return the closed device to AccuStar right away. Radon decays quickly. For best results, the lab should receive your short-term device within 4 days, but no more than 7 days after the end of the test. We recommend that you return your test device(s) via FedEx or UPS due to increasing delays in USPS deliveries. Contact AccuStar for return shipping labels at reduced prices. AccuStar is not responsible for any mail delays resulting in invalid results, nor any costs associated with return shipping. No deliveries are accepted on weekends or holidays. Results will be available the next business day after the lab receives the device.

Reports are issued Monday through Friday to the email address that was provided on the Data Form. Visit accustarlabs.com/ls to access information about your radon test. You must have your device number(s) and zip code of the property tested.

Amended Reports
If your test report is incomplete due to errors or missing information, you must send the required information to AccuStar in writing, by mail, email, or on our website.
